Rev. Kate Murphy has been our pastor since December of 2008. Kate is from Louisville, Kentucky. She studied Biology and Music at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She received her Masters of Divinity and Masters of Sacred Theology from Boston University and accepted her first call to be an associate pastor at Fourth Presbyterian, a multicultural, inner-city church in South Boston. Kate moved to Charlotte in 2004 when she accepted the call to be the associate pastor for youth and children’s ministry at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church. She and her husband Colin have two daughters, Callie and Quinn. She is (very slowly) working to complete her Doctorate of Ministry from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary where she is studying the connection between ecclesiology and eschatology. In her free time, Kate enjoys running, reading, writing, drinking coffee and watching pointless reality television.

Jacob Hanks started working at the Grove as the Administrative Assistant back in October of 2010. He graduated in May 2010 from UNC Charlotte with a BA in Organizational Communication. While in his senior year at UNCC, Jacob volunteered at the Firefly After-school Tutoring & Arts Club alongside friends from UNCC. During this time, Jacob felt a strong calling to work in a non-profit setting with children & educational ministries. Months later he came on staff with the Grove. Now Jacob holds his position as Administrative Assistant but has transformed his role into a part-time Ministry Coordinator position. Jacob helped start the NAM after-school Program in December 2010 and has served as the NAM Director ever since. Jacob’s passions involve youth education, cycling, & his volunteer work with Orphans to Ambassadors.
Rev. Barbara Smith
Rev. Barbara Smith is a licensed & ordained minister. Her singing ministry began after being trained in opera & voice at Curry College in Milton, MA. She received an academic honor from Phi Theta Barbara has also studied & sung with the opera company of CPCC. Barbara is the founder of Beauty for Ashes Prayer Ministry, & former senior pastor of Deeper Life Covenant Church. She has also served as a Prayer Counselor at 24-7, a prayer, mission, & justice ministry in Charlotte NC. She has preached, sang, & worked with several churches & several prayer or homeless ministries locally. She is currently attending Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury, NC. She currently serves at The Grove Presbyterian Church as our Prayer Pastor. Her passion is to serve God with her whole heart & bring deliverance to the captive. She is a devoted wife & mother of three.
Music Leaders: Dan Williams has been leading music at the Grove since April 2013. Dan is from Macedonia, Ohio (near Cleveland). He studied Systems and Controls engineering at Case Western Reserve University. Dan has lived in the Charlotte area since 2005 where he served in various roles leading youth music programs as well as serving as an associate choir director at Cooks Presbyterian church. When not serving at the Grove, he can be found working at Premier in Ballantyne where he fills the position of Sr. Solution Analyst building healthcare applications. Dan and his wife, Betsy, have two children, Cayden and Lily.
Octavia Ramsey studied Psychology at New Jersey City University, then worked 6 years as a Youth Leader at Loving Grace Worship Center where she helped youth to know & grown in Christ, in prayer, & in character development. In 2011 she adventurously moved to Charlotte, NC. She joined the ministry staff at The Grove in 2012 serving as the Youth Leader & bringing all of her training & experience with urban youth into the dynamics of The Grove. It has been a very different experience for her, but she is bringing her own style to The Grove & allowing God to use her to grow this ministry & to grow the youth in our community.
